Several things to try are below. For #1 and #2 I'm assuming you are using a dynamic handheld microphone with a male XLR connector.
  1. Are you sure you are using Mic level input and not line level?
  2. Perhaps the cable from your pre-amp to the sound card Mic input is not wired correctly? The 15' and 5' cables we provide for XLR to sound cards/USB pods is configured correctly. Click for 5' Cable or 15' Cable.
  3. When running the Set up microphone, are you selecting headset microphone? If not select this even if it is a handheld microphone. This is because a dynamic microphone should be considered a close talk microphone with a distance of 1" from one's mouth.
  4. Check the soundcard  settings (under Recording Devices and Levels) and see if there is a boost function.
  5. Try unloading Skype as it may be grabbng priority of audio input.

Hi,

 

Thanks for your responses. I am able to make a test recording with the microphone as per the post from mmarkoe. But the speech recognition tutorial refuses doesn't work neither does the Train your computer to better understand you.

The speech recognition audio meter is still completely irresponsive. Maybe I could try a USB mic or something.

Also my current set up works fine for skype, if this is any help.

Use sound recorder to make a test recording. It should be crisp, clear and free of electronic noise. CLICK HERE for instructions.

Hi John,

Welcome to the forum.

The problem you are having is strange... Are you able to work through the speech tutorial located here:

Control Panel > Speech Recognition Options > Take Speech Tutorial

Also,
what about the additional training option at:

Control Panel > Speech Recognition Options > Train your computer to better understand you

Please let us know if you can complete these successfully.

Hi all,
 
I have just set up my speech recognition via the windows speech recognition wizard and the wizard seems to respond to the microphone by moving the green bar from left to right. However, when the speech recognition GUI appears on the desktop in listening mode the audio meter doesn't seem to respond at all to my voice.
 
I am using a dynamic mic with a pre-amp plugged in to the mic in on my motherboard. I have quite and old computer running windows vista, it generally works fine, but I don't know if it's good enough for speech recognition. 1.25 GHz processor and 1.5 GB ram.
